Keverne glanced over her shoulder. For Rakashan? Or what? She wasn't entirely sure, but she did know that whatever she had been looking for wasn't there. She began to scrape at a sand dune.
Sand slid away like water, revealing an opening. She slipped inside, stooping to avoid hitting her head, paws skidding a bit uncomfortably on the smoother-than-sand ground. She stood up quickly, banging her back on the sandy stone above. It wasn't a mistake, however. Sand shot down from the dune and covered her way out. She snorted as some of it went into her nostrils, then walked forward, deeper into the tunnel.
The sand that was scattered over the ground was soon not there at all, and the color of the tunnel faded from sandy to a bright white, and grew smoother. Soon, Keverne's paws betrayed her, and she slid forward, straight into a large chamber.
She looked around in relief. It had taken her longer than usual to get there.
"Kwolenth!" she snarled, looking around. "By the Web, Kwolenth, are you never here when I need you?"

The black-furred wolf raised his head at the sound of echo in the walls. He growled to himself. Web of Water. Huh. Keverne. He sighed and moved toward the sound, hearing words this time instead of pawsteps.
"Kwolenth! By the Web, Kwolenth, are you never here when I need you?"
He snorted in wolfish laughter. That was Keverne, all right.
"Thank you, Keverne, for the compliment," he answered, voice rasping only a bit. Strange. Usually, it was a lot...raspier...than this.

Keverne jumped, but only a bit. She regained her composure as her tail swished and she turned to Kwolenth.
"Oh! Hello, Kwolenth...nice to--see you." She sighed as his tail wagged. "I have something important to tell you," she continued. "The Isthmus has an Inner wolf. Rakashan." She looked warily at the black wolf, as though daring him to challenge her choice.

Kwolenth dipped his head to the younger wolf. "Very well," he said. "You chose well, Keverne. I don't doubt that Rakashan will be a good Isthmus wolf. Don't worry," he added, on impulse, "you don't have to stay and talk to be polite. I'll let you go." He wagged his tail, and turned, padding back to the tunnel from which he'd come--the one storing food, of course. Where else would he be?

"Thank you, Kwolenth," she answered the older wolf's compliment. Or at least, she thought it was a compliment. With Kwolenth, one was never sure.
She turned, as had the black-furred wolf, and made her way back from the tunnel into her own territory. She only slipped once, and for Keverne, that wasn't too bad. She scraped her claws at the sand covering her entrance, and luxuriated at the thought of being in her own territory again.
